A safe jobsite starts before the first tool is picked up. The right personal protective equipment can help reduce exposure to falling objects, flying debris, sharp materials, excessive noise, airborne contaminants, traffic and fall hazards. But there is no single kit that is right for every worker or every task.

This construction PPE checklist gives contractors, supervisors and purchasing teams a practical starting point for selecting jobsite safety equipment. Use it alongside a job-specific hazard assessment, manufacturer instructions and the OSHA standards that apply to your work.

Do not treat this as a universal shopping list. The correct equipment depends on the hazard, exposure level, work environment and compatibility of all PPE worn together.

1. Start With a Jobsite Hazard Assessment

Before ordering construction safety gear, identify the hazards workers may encounter. Look at each task and ask what could strike, cut, burn, crush, irritate, contaminate or otherwise injure the worker. Consider normal operations as well as setup, cleanup, maintenance and emergency situations.

OSHA explains that PPE is used to minimize exposure to workplace hazards and should be part of a program covering selection, use, maintenance and worker training. When hazards can be eliminated or reduced through engineering, work-practice or administrative controls, those controls should come before relying on PPE alone. A useful hazard review should consider:

  • Falling, flying or swinging objects
  • Sharp edges, pinch points and abrasive materials
  • Dust, fumes, vapors and oxygen-deficient atmospheres
  • Noise from tools, machinery and equipment
  • Chemicals, concrete, solvents and other skin or eye exposures
  • Electrical hazards
  • Heat, sparks and welding radiation
  • Vehicle traffic and low-visibility conditions
  • Open edges, elevated work and other fall hazards

2. Head Protection

Use appropriate head protection wherever there is a risk of impact, falling or flying objects, or electrical contact. Selection should account for the type of impact protection needed, the electrical class, the environment and any accessories that will be attached.

Check the shell and suspension before use. Remove equipment from service if it has cracks, dents, damaged suspension components or other signs of deterioration. A hard hat or safety helmet should fit securely without interfering with safety glasses, hearing protection or other required PPE.

3. Eye and Face Protection

Safety glasses are common on construction sites, but some tasks require sealed goggles, a face shield or a combination of protection. Match the product to the actual hazard, such as impact, dust, liquid splash, chemicals or optical radiation from welding and cutting.

Look for the appropriate markings and verify that the equipment meets the standard required for the application. A face shield generally protects more of the face, but it may need to be worn over primary eye protection rather than used by itself. Make sure lenses remain clear, secure and free of damage that could reduce visibility.

4. Hearing Protection

Construction noise can come from saws, grinders, compressors, generators, heavy equipment and repeated impact work. Earplugs, earmuffs or dual protection may be appropriate depending on measured exposure and the employer's hearing-conservation requirements.

Choose protection with a suitable Noise Reduction Rating, then train workers on correct fit. The number printed on the package does not help if an earplug is inserted incorrectly or an earmuff cannot seal because of eyewear, hair or other equipment.

5. Hand Protection

There is no universal construction glove. The best work glove is the one selected for the specific task and hazard. A thin, high-dexterity glove may work well for handling small parts, while cut-resistant, chemical-resistant, impact-resistant, welding or insulated gloves serve different purposes.

When comparing gloves, consider:

  • Cut, puncture and abrasion resistance
  • Grip in dry, wet or oily conditions
  • Chemical compatibility
  • Heat or cold exposure
  • Impact protection
  • Dexterity and touchscreen needs
  • Correct sizing and cuff style

Inspect gloves for holes, tears, worn coatings and contamination. Replace them when damage or degradation could reduce protection.

6. High-Visibility Apparel

High-visibility clothing helps workers stand out around traffic, mobile equipment and low-light work areas. The correct garment depends on the work environment and required visibility level. Options may include safety vests, short- or long-sleeve shirts, jackets and rainwear.

Confirm the garment's performance classification when a standard or contract requires it. Reflective material should be visible, clean and in good condition. The garment must also fit correctly and avoid creating snag or entanglement hazards.

7. Protective Footwear

Footwear may need to protect against impact, compression, punctures, slipping, electrical hazards, chemicals or hot surfaces. Safety-toe protection alone does not make a boot suitable for every construction environment.

Choose footwear based on the hazard assessment and applicable requirements. Inspect the outsole, toe area, upper and seams regularly. Worn tread, exposed components, separation or deep cuts can be signs that replacement is needed.

8. Respiratory Protection

Dust masks, filtering facepiece respirators, reusable half-mask respirators and supplied-air systems are not interchangeable. Respirator selection must be based on the contaminant, concentration, work conditions and required protection factor.

When respirators are required, employers may also need a written respiratory-protection program, medical evaluations, fit testing and employee training. Use only the correct NIOSH-approved product and cartridges or filters specified for the hazard. Facial hair, incorrect sizing and incompatible eyewear can interfere with the seal of a tight-fitting respirator.

9. Fall-Protection Equipment

Working at height may require guardrails, safety nets, personal fall-arrest systems, positioning systems or other controls. A personal system can involve more than a harness. Anchorage, connectors, lanyards, self-retracting lifelines, clearance, rescue planning and compatibility all matter.

Follow the equipment manufacturer's instructions and the fall-protection rules that apply to the task. Inspect harness webbing, stitching, labels, hardware and connectors before use. Equipment that has arrested a fall, failed inspection or reached a manufacturer-defined limit should be removed from service.

10. Protective Clothing and Task-Specific PPE

Some jobs require protection beyond the basic construction PPE checklist. Welding, electrical, concrete, painting, chemical handling, grinding and hot work can each introduce additional hazards. The correct solution may include flame-resistant clothing, chemical-resistant coveralls, welding helmets, sleeves, aprons, knee protection or other specialized gear.

Make sure separate PPE items work together. For example, a face shield should not prevent a hard hat from fitting securely, and safety-glass temples should not break the seal of earmuffs or other equipment.

How to Choose the Right Construction PPE

Use these purchasing checks before placing an order:

  1. Match the product to the hazard. Start with the job and exposure, not the lowest price or a familiar brand name.
  2. Verify the applicable standard. Look for the required OSHA, ANSI/ISEA, ASTM or NIOSH designation for the product and task.
  3. Confirm proper fit. OSHA's construction PPE criteria require employers to select equipment that properly fits each affected employee. Provide appropriate sizes and adjustability for the workforce.
  4. Check compatibility. Evaluate the complete PPE system as workers will actually wear it.
  5. Consider comfort and usability. Excessive bulk, heat, pressure or limited visibility can make consistent use more difficult.
  6. Plan inspection and replacement. Know how the equipment will be cleaned, stored, inspected and replaced.
  7. Standardize repeat purchases. Record manufacturer part numbers, sizes, colors and approved substitutes so crews receive the correct items every time.

Before each shift or use, workers and supervisors should check that:

  • The selected PPE matches the task and known hazards.
  • Each item fits the worker and is adjusted correctly.
  • There are no cracks, cuts, tears, holes, broken parts or missing labels.
  • Lenses and reflective materials are clean and visible.
  • Respirator filters, cartridges and seals are appropriate and serviceable.
  • Harness webbing, stitching, hardware and connectors pass inspection.
  • PPE items remain compatible when worn together.
  • Damaged or questionable equipment is removed from service.
  • Replacement PPE is available before work begins.

  • Buying one size for everyone: Proper fit affects both protection and whether workers consistently wear the equipment.
  • Selecting by appearance alone: Similar-looking products can have different ratings, materials and limitations.
  • Using one glove for every task: Cut resistance does not automatically provide chemical, heat, impact or electrical protection.
